Year 2: Project 2 - 1,10,10

When given the brief of 1,10,1000, my intention was to explore how my product(s) could be a small batch or mass-produced, I am interested in design made for the home and for everyday use. My initial inspiration came from fruit and vegetables, in particular oranges and when cut, the texture and linear quality that could be seen within.

Inspiration: Images taken as primary research for this project.
I began to explore the theme of fruit and veg in my sketchbook. Through this exploration, I narrowed down the look of the orange that I enjoyed explore that the most, I was captured by the segments, line and shapes that could be seen in it when cut in half. This idea I pushed further in my sketchbook.

Sketchbook Pages: Exploring colour, shape and composition.
I have then translate these ideas and concepts into my print design. I have done this my producing a printing screen with a orange motif on it. As done previously, I have experimented with colour, composition and layout of what are my printed napkins.

Print Samples: Exploring colour, shape and form.
To make my body of work a united piece, I wanted to carry the theme of oranges into my ceramic work. Although simple, the process that I adopted was to dried out slices of oranges and pressed them into clay. The impressions of the orange are to be the decorative feature of my napkin rings, sitting on the  front of the ring.

Napkin Rings: Ceramic napkin rings ready for firing.
To match my napkins, I had to think about how I wanted to glaze my ceramic rings so that they both worked together nicely. I tested both velvet and underglazes to see which I preferred. In the end I decided to go with the underglazes as they had a  natural look to them, also it allowed the detailed captured from the orange to still be seen.

Glaze: Exploring underglazes creating an natural look.

Glaze Tests: Comparing velvet glazes and underglazes.
Testing Colours: Picturing how print work and ceramic work will together.

As this print is food based, I have explore the potential of transfer my print onto kitchen textile ware - and in this instance onto aprons aswell as napkins. I have done this through using my photoshop skills. I have also experimented with other possible napkin designs too.

Other Products: Possible ideas for apron designs.

Other Napkins: Possible napkin designs for the future.
After producing a selection of napkins and rings I have brought them together to create a united collection. I can see the pontenital for these napkins and rings to be made as a small batch and they also have the ability to be mass produced in necessary.
